'Movin the hype track'
PASSENGER 19
Release date: Oct 2004
Distribution by: SRD
Kool Keith is a modern day hip hop icon. He became a global mainstream name when he released his Dr. Octogan LP alongside Dan Automator and DJ Q-Bert on Bulk/Mo Wax back in 1996. But before that he was known to many as the mainman of Ultramagnetic MCs, alongside CedGee whose first release 'Travelling at the speed of thought' turned the scene on its head back in 1986 with its bizarre lyrics and references and equally memorable video. Since those projects he has collaberated with many such as Ice T and the Prodigy and a whole heap of young underground hip hop sensations. Keith is one of hip hops most colourful and loved characters and we are honoured to have got him on Passenger with his breakbeat debut almost 20 years after he infected our heads with his memorable versus on some of hip hops biggest anthems.
Sticking with the traditional ASMB sound made famous with their previous two LPs (Stayfresh on Shadow Crpytic 2003 and Beat the System on Botchit and Scarper 2002) the backing track nails together grimey basslines alongside booty bass and electric guitars to create a thunderous tune with lashings of funk, sounding like the Prodigy if they stepped into the Nuskool arena. This track is one of many forthcoming vocal excursions being made this year on Passenger in an attempt to bring breakbeat into a more mainstream audience
Non of this would be possible without the help and coordination of Dan Merlot, who alongside Funkmonster (ex Botchit and Scarper) make up the group Crash Berlin. This track started life as a hip hop tune and will be released on Crash Berlin's forthcoming US LP.
